I can’t believe we spent an entire month in Germany and still there was so much more we would have loved to see and do! Being with family made travel SO much easier. We had translators, choufures, tour guides, chefs and an Amazon address…what more could you want! Oh yeah…and free rent!
We all really enjoyed getting to know our family so much better. Richard took Michael and I on an “adult” tour of Munich, Caroline toured us around castles, the countryside and even joined us in our toboggan down the Alps. We’ll never forget our dinner at the fligenpache restaurant! Egon was such a generous host and he amazed us with his unique ability to know the exact location of any piece of information within the hundreds of books that fill his bookshelves!
One of our favorite days was spent soaring over red roofs and tall steeples of the German countryside in glider planes. I still can’t believe I put Trevor in a plane with an 18yr old pilot and no engine. Thank God for his protection!! After a delicious homemade lunch we got to skip rocks in a sparkling clear river. The forests and lakes in Germany are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.
We enjoyed getting to catch up with Erin and finally get a decent Mexican food fix! The kids loved getting to fill her in on their journey so far and she was even able to teach them a little Munich history.
We can now check Oktoberfest off our bucket list! So being from the OC, and being used to our version of a fair, when Caroline took us to see the “biggest Ox in Bavaria” I was expecting a large animal right? Not in Germany! It’s a huge beer tent with a giant Ox cooking on a spit. Doesn’t get much more German than that!
Unfortunately the day we went was the coldest and rainiest day of our entire stay. Weather aside, we had such a great time having our family together…and in costume (or traditional Bavarian wear as Richard would insist!). It was really great getting to see Hydee and Felix, we’re so thankful they made the trek out to visit.
Charlotte is already planning her next trip to Germany. She’s hoping to spend a summer as a nanny for Mario and Marike while learning German. We’re all for it since college there is free!
